It’s not that kind of Communism. In 1978, the People’s Republic of China under the wise leadership of Deng Xiaoping implemented what is often called the Open Up Policy. Various economic reforms happened since then, but now workers earn their wages in much the same was as people in Western countries. They realized that people just weren’t motivated to work their best if they didn’t have an incentive to do so. I like to think of the open up policy as China’s Great Bridge. The Great Wall was built to isolate China and defend it from hostile foreigners, but the open up policy has allowed China to build economic ties and–more than that–friendships with foreign countries that have strengthened their nation, enriched the lives of the Chinese people, and enriched the lives of every foreigner who sought to become a friend of China.
