Gong Chan’s answer is correct, but I’d just like to expand on it a little. Note that a decrease in spead is also “acceleration”. In everyday speech we usually say “deceleration”, but in physics, any change in speed is called acceleration. Also, a change in direction is considered acceleration. (The term “velocity” refers to the combination of speed and direction… the definitiion of acceleration is the rate of change in velocity). Basically, anything that makes you move in your seat when you’re driving your car is acceleration (stepping on the gas, stepping on the brakes, turning a corner, etc.). Speed is simply how fast you are going at any given point in time (notice you DON’T move in your seat when you’re going a steady 100 MPH; this is because you’re not accelerating). As a bonus note (but totally outside the scope of your question): Einstein figured out that the force of gravity is indistinguishable from acceleration and, thus, is the same thing.
