If a student takes the SAT Reasoning Test (formerly SAT I) multiple times, which scores do the colleges use in the admission review?
In our experience most colleges select the highest SAT Reasoning Test verbal and math scores they receive, regardless of the test dates or number of test administrations. Some institutions, including the University of Texas-Austin and Texas A&M-College Station, will select the highest same-day total and will not combine sub scores from different administrations. We have never encountered a college that averages the SAT Reasoning Test scores or penalizes the student who takes the SAT more than a certain number of times. The practice of selecting the highest score received extends to the SAT Subject Tests and the ACT, which is why we encourage students to take more than one set of SAT Subject Tests.
