If a parent calls and asks how his or her child is performing in a class, can a university staff member release this information?
Even though the person requesting this information may be the student’s parent, FERPA recognizes students in post-secondary education as adults, regardless of age. Therefore, a university staff member cannot give out grades, or any other non-directory information without an official release form or current tax return, which the student has signed.
