Snacking is rarely needed by anyone eating 3 full meals a day unless they are VERY active, a growing child, prone to unexplained hypoglycemia (which should be investigated), or training for the Olympics. If any of the above apply, consult a dietician to determine their nutritional needs. Other than that, snacks should be minimized. For example, a person with Type 2 diabetes usually (but not always) is overweight and needs to lose weight to improve their insulin resistance. As such, snacking can add extra calories that a Type 2 diabetic simply should be avoiding even if the food is low carb and not causing blood glucose spikes. Snacking can be a major cause for weight gain, poor blood glucose control, and the need for an increase in medication/insulin. For those with Type 1 diabetes, it’s a little different.
