Every time you download a song, a royalty is paid to the songwriter or publisher. This is called a mechanical royalty and its a standard, government-stipulated amount. If you buy a CD, that mechanical royalty is paid by the artist or record company before they duplicate the CDs, so we have no part in its payment.
