Deciding who the member/s of an LLC is/are is an internal matter, to be settled at your “initial organizational meeting.” Adding new members can be done at subsequent meetings, which can happen as often or as infrequently as you’d like, but we recommend having one at least once a year. Your meetings can be very informal. All of the interested parties sit down together (maybe at the kitchen table) and decide what the ownership will be, and maybe other details such as deciding to open a bank account. You should, however, record the details of the meeting, stating what you decided in terms of ownership percentage per person, and then every member should sign and date these recorded “minutes.” The type of federal tax return you use each year will be determined by whether you are a single- or multi-member LLC, and the form will indicate such.
