Id like to know the differences between copperheads cottonmouths, and rattlesnakes?
Answer The differences between the copperhead, cottonmouth, and rattlesnake are mainly habitat preference, size range, and behavior. The copperhead and the cottonmouth are in the same genus which makes those two closely related and all three are in the Viperidae family (pit vipers). All three pit vipers may vibrate the tips of their tails when they perceive danger, but only the rattlesnake actually has ratttles. Copperheads tend to stay in wooded areas with ample leaf litter for camouflage. Copperheads are usually smaller, have less venom, and smaller fangs. All of these factors tend to make the copperhead less dangerous, however in Texas, which has the highest number of snakebites recorded in the United States, the Copperhead is responsible for more snakebites than any other poisonous species. Fatalities due to copperheads are almost unknown. People are often bitten by copperheads because they didn’t see them due to their very effective camouflage.
