If you want a gun for your home only (not to carry with you) you may be best served by a shotgun. A Mossburg pump in 12Ga. or 20Ga. is a good choice. You can buy a single shot version at most gun shops used for about $75 to $100. A new pump will cost about $250. If you are small (weigh less than 150lbs) you may appreciate the lesser kick of a 20 gauge. You can buy a padlock that fits through the port hole on the side of the gun and locks at the bottom so you can prevent the problem of what if a burglar breaks in before you get home. The great thing about a shotgun is that you can do real damage by just getting close and they are unlikely to harm anyone beyond the room you are shooting in. The lead shot does not travel like a bullet does. Handguns have the advantage that you can hide them which means you can check out a strange noise and if it turns out to be someone who should be there you did not offend or alarm them.
