If the project in any way involves the recruitment of study subjects (enrolled from either within the classroom itself or from outside of the classroom, department or university), then ethics approval is required. If students are participating in a practicum where they are collecting information as part of their training on appropriate future professional conduct and there is no research component to this activity, ethics approval is not needed. As instructor, you should first determine if all students in the class will be performing the same research project or whether each student will be carrying out a different project. a) If all students will be performing the same project: The instructor should take the role of the principal investigator and submit a generic Application for Ethical Review for the class.
