Protected health information can be shared with other health care providers for the purpose of treating the patient. No patient authorization is needed. Care must be taken to see that the fax goes to the correct destination and that a person is at the receiving end to pick up the fax or that the machine is in a secure location. A fax policy will be developed soon.
