I was underpaid during the 2009/10 financial year. What are the income tax implications if I did not receive my backpay before 30 June 2010?
If you were underpaid and did not receive your outstanding pay by 30 June 2010, the amount of taxable gross income showing on your payment summary will be less than what it should be and you will be taxed on this lesser amount. When your outstanding pay is paid after 30 June 2010, this extra amount will be shown on your payslip and included in the amount of taxable gross income on your 2010/11 payment summary. Therefore, over the course of the 2009/10 and 2010/11 financial years you will receive, and be taxed on, the correct amount of taxable gross income.
