I was taught that Automated ABR is the ‘Gold standard’ for hearing screening. Why does BSC use Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) rather than Automated Auditory Brainstem Response (AABR)?
ABR requires a child to be in a quiet state of rest or preferably sleeping in order to obtain valid test results and involves significantly more preparation and administration time. Automated ABR testing is simply not practical in the Medical Home setting. OAEs are established as an accepted, routine and reliable method for screening for sensory hearing loss in infants and toddlers.
