I was diagnosed with Vanishing Twin Syndrome, what is it exactly?
Answer Very often, a woman can conceive twins and, after a few weeks, when taking a second sonogram, it is noticed that there is suddenly only one baby. This was called the case of the “Vanishing Twin Syndrome”. One of the babies stopped growing (for whatever reason) and resorbed. The remaining baby is perfectly fine and there is no effect on survival. Early and more precise sonography has revealed the incidence of multiple gestation to be 3.29-5.39% before 12 weeks. However, in over 20% of such cases, one or more of the pregnancies spontaneously disappears. Although this event may be associated with vaginal bleeding, the prognosis remains good for the remaining twin.
