Its difficult to start a new practice or program. I started a bereavement program for kids (which used a lot of arts and crafts) and it was hard to get a base of 25 members for the group and camp. Here’s what I did: I sent colorful flyers to schools (directed at the guidance/counseling dept), churches, pediatrician offices, social services agencies, community mental health offices, and private practices. With the flyers, I included a letter that detailed my program. I later changed the letter into a kid-friendly pamphlet. My mailing list was 250 addresses long. You may want to use an actual child’s drawing on your flyer to draw attention (get permission from the parents first). I placed an announcement in the local parenting magazine. I also posted our group meetings in the health calender of the local paper. I then got involved in a local networking group of other bereavement professionals. A lot of my referrals came from there.
