I want to research my family history and want to know if the Coucil has any system for accessing declassified past Censuses?
The censuses that are currently publicly available are those from 1841 through to 1911. Southend Library has microfilm of the census records covering the Rochford Enumeration District, which covers the Southend, Rochford and Castle Point areas for the years 1841 through to 1901. Microfilm reader printers can be booked by telephone 01702 215011 x 4126. Printing from microfilm is priced at 40p per A4 sheet. Library staff will help with loading and printing from the mircofilm and will also give basic guidance on searching. All censuses from 1841 through to 1911 are available on the Internet and all the libraries in the Borough have PC’s with free Internet access to anyone with a Southend, Essex or Thurrock library ticket. Although basic name searches are free any further data is not. The 1841 to 1901 censuses are available on www.ancestry.co.uk and this requires a personal subscription to the database.
