I want to record dialogue for a flash animation Im working on. What would be the best microphone for the job?
The short answer is, unless you want the mic to come with a software suite allowing you to modify recording bit rates and have all kinds of editing features, feel free to hop down to Wal-Mart and buy anythign that looks like something you would want. As an online gamer that uses VoIP a lot, I would recommend anything from companies like Altec Lansing or Logitech, who offer really nice ones in the 15-50$ range. I use a headset myself, but a desk mic will be fine. An omnidirectional (all directions) can pick up noise equally from all angles, while unidirectional (one direction) has one angle that it recieves sound best from. I think your need and the needs of people doing Podcasts are quite the same, so I linked a page where exactly same question has been answered just with the word “Flash” being replaced by “Podcast”. In general a simple microphone already does the trick. There are people who like headsets (you haven’t said anything about your preferences in your question), others don’t. The one answering there gives a short list of possible microphones that are quite enough for the need of recoding speech for something like a Podcast or other “low-bandwith”-formats (I count Flash-audio to that).
