If you are both on the lease you may be able to get out of it by finding someone to replace you, this is called an “assignment” which is different than sub-leasing. If you get someone to take over your place on the lease then they won’t have to sign a new lease with the roommate, they just replace you for the remainder of the term. You are legally obligated to pay until you find someone else. If the lease does not allow for an assignment, you may be able to sub-lease if the roommate agrees to it. You are still responsible for the rent, however, if the sub-leaser does not pay. As far as the DSL goes, you aren’t responsible unless your name is also on the account. If she signed up for a year in her name, then it’s her responsibility. If you are able to get out early, make sure you discuss the terms of a return on your deposit, and get something in writing or get her to pay you it asap, otherwise you may never see it.
