With the container gardening season fast approaching, many gardeners are getting ready to fill containers with soilless mixes. If you have lots of containers, you know how expensive it can be to use prepared, bagged mixes. It is certainly more frugal to mix your own. A standard recipe for a medium-textured mix is; 50-60% Canadian peat moss, 20-25% coarse sand or perlite, and 20-25% ground pine bark. Other recipes I’ve come across for small to medium-sized containers include these mixes of materials: two parts peat moss, one part perlite, one part coarse sand; one part peat moss, one part coarse sand, one part pine bark; and one part peat moss, one part pine bark, one part perlite. You may wish to try some of these mixes and determine which one(s) work the best for your container gardens. Perlite is lighter in weight than the sand, which may be a consideration for your container garden. Make sure materials are somewhat moist before mixing, particularly the peat moss.
