I want to help by making a financial donation, but I hear there are scam fundraising operations out there. What is the American Red Cross doing to ensure that our dollars get to you?
A The Red Cross takes stewardship of donor dollars very seriously and pursues fraud and fraudulent attempts to the fullest extent of the law, whether on the Internet or in local communities. The American Red Cross works with the FBI and the U.S. Department of Justice to close down fraudulent Web sites and donor scams as quickly as we become aware of them. In a follow-up to massive fundraising that was done from the grassroots to the boardrooms after 9-11, it was found that, although there were attempts at fraud, losses were less than one percent compared to the dollars collected. The safest way to be sure your donation reaches the American Red Cross is to donate on line at www.redcross.org, by calling 1-800-HELP NOW, or through your local chapter. If you want to support a local fundraising effort to benefit the Red Cross, contact your local chapter to be sure organizers have cleared the event with chapter officials.
