I want to buy my first distortion pedal. Am I better off buying a new one from an official store/website or a second-hand one?

Usually the case with all solid-state electronics devices is that if it is working now, it will continue to work. If you buy a used one, just make sure you check it out thoroughly and look for defects, like does it make a noise if you step on it the wrong way or does the cable have to be inserted “Just so” or else it doesn’t make connection, or is the foot switch worn out, or do the control knobs make noise when you turn them, or anything else that could be wrong with it. If you find a good, reliable pedal at a great second-hand price, there would be no strong reason to buy new except maybe the existance of a factory warranty.
