Don’t think you have to pay a lot to get a quality dog unless you want to show, but carefully check any breeders facilities, pedigree, and medical checks they have done on the parents and puppies. http://www.akc.
Best website out there for selection is by far http://www.puppyfind.com Free to look, but you can only contact those who have paid for a listing, otherwise you have to pay a small fee to view them if the lister made the ad for free. Most people pay for their ads to be public. Others keep them private because it is free to list that way, then only buyers have an expense. Definitely the best I have found, and I personally pay to advertise there (when we have litters of great danes). We charge anywhere from $500-$2000 for American Great Danes depending on markings/pedigree. We charge anywhere from $900-$3000 for 1/2 European/American Dane pups depending on markings/pedigree.
