Most diesel cars are expected to continue to emit more local air pollutants than petrol cars even with the introduction of tighter vehicle emission standards. But there are recent developments in diesel car technology that have the potential to offer big reductions in the local air pollutants emitted. After further consultation on the technical details rules will be put in place to waive the diesel supplement for certain very low emission diesel cars.
