I understand there are three levels of EMS providers. What is the difference between the levels of providers?
EMT-Basics (EMT-Bs) are basic life support providers. They are trained in basic first aid, CPR and to assist patients in taking medications. EMT-Intermediates (EMT-Is) are licensed advanced life support providers. Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS) recognizes this level of provider as the Cardiac Rescue Technician – Intermediate. In addition to the skills performed by EMT-B’s, Intermediates can perform IV access, ET intubation and ECG monitoring and administer emergency cardiac medications. EMT-Paramedics (EMT-Ps) are licensed advanced life providers that can perform all skills of the EMT-B and EMT-I, as well as advanced airway maneuvers (i.e. surgical airways) and additional medications. The paramedic has a vast knowledge of human anatomy and physiology and pathophysiology. This additional knowledge sets this level at a higher standard than the EMT-I.
