I understand that NOAO sends a mailbag twice each week to Chile. Can I send a small package in the mailbag to a co-worker at CTIO?
Whether you can send something in the mailbag depends on what is being sent. Contents of the mail shipments and freight mail can ONLY consist of printed materials. Music CDs, and audio, video are not allowed. Work-related data tapes, CDs or DVDs are allowed. Items addressed to employees in Chile that do not meet the “printed materials” classification must be sent as a non-official freight or personal goods shipment and cannot be sent with official items. The NOAO procurement manager is authorized to open mail destined for Chile to verify that the contents comply with the regulations. The mailbag cannot be used for urgent shipments of non-qualified materials, including urgently needed medication. Such items must be sent as personal goods via an express freight service such as Federal Express. The mailbag is sent from Shipping & receiving. The mailbags are sent via Federal Express and the transit time to La Serena in only a matter of days. The mailbag is closed and the shipping documents
