I understand that faculty members at some other universities are required to report their effort only twice or even just once per year. Why does UTMB require faculty to report quarterly?

UTMB requires faculty to report effort no less than quarterly because of the requirement to follow UTMBs established policy on cost transfers, which, if necessary must take place within 90 days of the expenditures date. If an employees effort percentage on a sponsored project is significantly less than the pay percentage for that reporting period, the Principal Investigator may need to initiate a cost transfer to move some salary for the employee off the project for that time period. The cost transfer, as noted, must be accomplished within 90 days (one quarter) of the date of the cost.
