I thought the Air Force Academy was somewhere in Colorado. Whats with this business of being at Lackland AFB, TX?
The Air Force Academy is a full 4 year university for students that want to be officers in the US Air Force. It is similar to Annapolis for the Navy and West Point for the Army. You have to be of a certain age, with good grades, athletic ability, and leadership potential. You need a nomination from a Congressman or Senator also. Graduates of the Academy receive a BS in one of 32 different majors, and a commission as a 2nd Lt in the Air Force. About half go on to pilot training. Lackland AFB is where new enlisted recruits spend 8.5 weeks in basic military training, before moving on to specialized training in their designated career fields. These are 2 completely different training centers, and completion of basic military training at Lackland does not automatically earn you a trip to the Academy. It is highly competitive to get into the Academy and roughly 25% that get in do not graduate. I hope this helps.
