I teach students in the upper grades. What is the best way to remediate basic facts?
As we said above, more drill is not the way to teach basic facts. A good way to begin is to assess the student to determine which specific facts are known and unknown. Then do an in-depth assessment to find out strengths, weaknesses, and current strategies. It is important to investigate what command of number relationships and operations the students have. Finally, it is important to build success into the remediation plan.
