I see that Intersil offers a wide variety of RS-485 transceivers, but no RS-422 specific transceivers. Why?
RS-485 devices are RS-422 compliant by definition, so there is no reason to offer specific RS-422 versions. Nevertheless, there are certain configurations that lend themselves to RS-422 networks. For example, RS-422 allows only one driver on any bus, so no driver enable is required. Additionally, 2-wire bi-directional transmission isn’t possible with RS-422, since a device on any RS-422 bus is either transmit or receive, so ICs with separate RX in and Tx out connections are ideal. The ISL8488 and ISL8490 pinouts fit these requirements, and are excellent choices for RS-422 networks.
