I saw a 1909S VDB cent for sale at the local dealers shop. How do I tell its real?
The best way to answer this question is to tell you the two most typical ways these coins are faked, and have you look for signs of these fakes. First, check the mint mark to ensure it’s the right style of mint mark and that it’s an original mint mark (not added to the coin after manufacture). The proper style of mint mark would be one that has a ‘curly-que’ in the top serif, and the outer edges of the serifs are straight up and down.
