In 1995, NPDC was closed by the State of New Jersey and the last remaining patients were removed in 1998. Even before the facility officially closed its doors, buildings were left vacant and not properly maintained. When the State officially abandoned the property there was minimal maintenance and security provided to the site and it was left to rapidly deteriorate into what stands today.
