I read something about uploading oneself to a virtual environment… can conscioussness really be uploaded, and will that really be me?
A. Many people have thought about this. And nobody has a conclusive answer. If you were to upload your mind in the sense that we upload files, a copy would be made. Would this be you? Most people think not. The real you (that is: your unique stream of conscioussness) will still be in your flesh and blood body. The copied you would share your all your memories and all your knowledge. He would probably *feel* like he was you. Yet he’s there in the computer, and you are still sitting outside it. However, if we were to use advanced nanotechnology and advanced knowledge of brains/intelligence to gradually replace your biological brain with a different type of nanotechnological brain, you will remain yourself all through the process. This process is not at all that different from what’s going on right now: you are gradually being replaced by other molecular particles all the time. Every few years, we consist of a completely different set of molecular particles than we did a few years back. Y
