According to a Nova Scotia Forest Industry Labour Force Profile that was completed by the Atlantic Provinces Economic Council in 2004, the forestry labour force in Nova Scotia is going through a transformation. The number of workers in the forest products sector has been growing. However, the supply of labour is dwindling due to demographic factors such as slow population growth, and aging population and the urbanization of the labour force. The dwindling pool of labour in the forest industry is not unique to Nova Scotia but the potential deficit is larger than other parts of the country due to its older workforce and lower unemployment rate. Regions of the province and sub-industries within the forest sector with an older workforce and low unemployment may face the labour supply problem sooner than others.
