I passed my test after 1 January 1997 and drive a Land Rover Discovery. Can I tow a caravan?
No, unless you can find one with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) not exceeding 750kg. Recent Discoveries have a MAM of about 3,200kg, hence the standard limit of 750kg is invoked. Now if you towed with, say, a Ford Mondeo, with a MAM of, say, 2,035kg, then the MAM of caravan you can tow goes up to 3,500kg 2,035kg = 1,465kg. However, the licence requirement limiting you to no more than 100 per centof the cars unladen weight would reduce this figure a little more. The Club would, of course, recommend this figure is further reduced to 85 per centof car kerbweight, giving a final caravan MAM of 1,275kg, subject to car model.
