Tiedown hardware should not be used for any lifting application, regardless of the seemingly inconsequential amount of weight involved. Tiedown hardware is mass produced in foreign countries, with materials that are not suited for lifting, i.e., elongation, ductility, etc. Likewise, tiedown fittings are not properly finished in the areas where they interface with the sling webbing. If a tiedown fitting fails, in a tiedown application, there is generally no catastrophic consequence. Multiple tiedowns are used and we have all seen the “stray” tiedown lying on the road, while the remaining assemblies hold the load securely. If the tiedown fitting fails, when lifting the 200 lbs., one of a kind aerospace object, valued at $750,000.00, there will be an entirely different outcome, not to mention the effect to the individuals that might be in the proximity of the object.
