I noticed that a 1000 Hz high frequency probe tone was not used to test tympanometry on a two month old. Should I have my nurse/MA repeat the test?
Yes. A 1000Hz probe tone is necessary for testing babies under 6 months old, due to the extreme flexibility of their ear canals which can mimic the movement of the eardrum and produce invalid ‘normal-looking’ tympanograms. Using a higher (1000 Hz) probe tone on an older child does not invalidate the test result, although sometimes the tympanogram may be a little harder to interpret.
