I notice there are two different reporting area types in the list of “Local Areas”. What is the difference?

All MA reporting areas start with “MA”. If this is followed by a number, then it is a statistical reporting area, of which there are 25. These areas should be used for all species except shellfish. A map of these areas can be found on our website at: http://www.mass.gov/dfwele/dmf/commercialfishing/catch_reports.htm#catch If the area is followed by a letter (e.g. BB1), this is a designated shellfish growing area. These areas should be used for reporting commercial shellfishing trips only.
