The typical lesson includes some ground instruction, a preflight briefing, an actual flight, a postflight debrief, and a question and answer session. If the clock is running, and the student is paying the instructor by the hour, there’s always a temptation to short-change the non-flying part of the lesson. By charging a flat rate per lesson (no matter how long it actually runs), the instructor is encouraging the student to get all of his or her questions answered.
