I notice that the RMS surge, sway and yaw motions quoted in LOWOUTs “normal mode” pages for TLPsim are generally smaller than those given in XCLDAT. Why aren they the same in the two output files?
The “normal mode page” values given in LOWOUT are approximate; they treat the TLP as a simple linear 2-D spring-mass system in the waterplane oscillating about its equilibrium offset. This calculation neglects pulldown and surge-sway-yaw coupling. The calculation in XCLDAT, like the “snapshot load” table at the end of LOWOUT is more rigorous; both these representations take pulldown and coupling into effect. This generally results in less motion (smaller RMS values) than the less quantitative estimates reported on the “normal mode” pages.
