It really depends on the functional reading level of the subjects. The MHLC was designed to be used with people who function at an eighth grade reading level. Usually, eighth graders are 13 years old. Therefore, it can be (and has been) successfully used with middle school aged children. If you want to assess the health locus of control beliefs of children younger than that, we recommend using the version of the scale published in July, 1987 by Thompson et al. in Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development (pp. 80-88).
