Card issuers refer to this number by various names, including “Card Verification Number,” “CID,” “Card Verification Value” (CVV), “Card Verification Code,” “CVV2,” “Personal Security Code” or “Security Code.” The number is not embossed on the card and hence not printed on receipts or billing statements, making it difficult for anyone other than the cardholder to know what the code is.
