I live in (Boolaroo, Argenton or Speers Point) and I want to install a rain water tank. Is it safe to drink the water?
During 2006 – but PRIOR to the closure of the smelter – the Environmental Health Centre (EHC) tested the water from a rain water tank on a property in Boolaroo over a period of 6 months (taking 1 sample of water per month and sending it off to be tested for Lead and Cadmium content at a Sydney laboratory). The results showed that for 4 out of the 6 samples tested, the lead content in the water exceeded the recommended guidelines. Heavy rain had been recorded prior to testing on the two occasions that the lead-in- water result was within the recommended guidelines. It can be assumed that the heavy rain flushed the lead from the tank. Following the rain, there was a repeated slight build up in lead levels within the rainwater tank. A similar pattern was found with Cadmium levels, the Cadmium levels exceeded the recommended guidelines on only one occasion. As most of the lead results and one of the Cadmium results was above the recommended guidelines, we cannot recommend consumption as dr
