During 2006 – but PRIOR to the closure of the smelter – the Environmental Health Centre (EHC) tested the water from a rain water tank on a property in Boolaroo over a period of 6 months (taking 1 sample of water per month and sending it off to be tested for Lead and Cadmium content at a Sydney laboratory). The results showed that for 4 out of the 6 samples tested, the lead content in the water exceeded the recommended guidelines. Heavy rain had been recorded prior to testing on the two occasions that the lead-in- water result was within the recommended guidelines. It can be assumed that the heavy rain flushed the lead from the tank. Following the rain, there was a repeated slight build up in lead levels within the rainwater tank. A similar pattern was found with Cadmium levels, the Cadmium levels exceeded the recommended guidelines on only one occasion.
