I live in another state but I received a Homestead Benefit Application Packet for a vacation home that I own at the New Jersey shore. Am I eligible for a homestead benefit?
No. You are not eligible for a homestead benefit and you should not file an application. One of the eligibility requirements for the homestead benefit is that you must occupy the property as your principal residence on October 1, 2009. A principal residence is the home which you actually and continually occupy as your permanent residence. No benefit will be granted for your vacation home, your “second” home, or a property which you own and rent to someone else.
