I know that I am tying my fishing knots right, but they still break too often. Whats happening?

When a knot is pulled down in fishing line it saws harshly against itself. If it is not wetted it will cut itself badly and then break under light strain. Also, you might want to test if the line is brittle by tying an overhand knot in it and seeing how easy it breaks (if the line is OK it should hold to about 50% line strength).
