The exam of the spine to evaluate its structure and function sets chiropractors apart from other physicians. The spinal column is a series of movable bones that begins at the base of the skull and goes all the way down. There are 31 pairs of nerves that exit the spine. There are 2 components of the nervous system, the peripheral and autonomic nerves. Think of autonomic as automatic. It tells your heart to beat and your lungs to breathe. In order to move your hand to pick up a hammer, you have to think about it. Your brain definitely sends a signal to that part of your body. This is your peripheral nervous system at work.
