I kissed a guy and right after I had signs of a cold sore, Is it Oral Herpes?
It probably is oral herpes – but you probably didn’t catch it from him. By the time they are adults, most people (50% to 80%) already have oral herpes. They catch it in childhood from kissing relatives. It usually takes a few days for an initial infection to become an outbreak, so it is not likely that you caught it from your first kiss (congratulations on that, by the way). It is so common that most people don’t worry about it. If your outbreaks are bad, or frequent, then go to a doctor – she can prescribe something that will reduce the severity and frequency of outbreaks. Most importantly, don’t get all paranoid about kissing people. Protect yourself when you finally have sex – use a condom. And don’t kiss anyone with an open sore on their face – just on general principal. But enjoy yourself. Me, I just love kissing. Don’t let your fear get in the way of your enjoyment of life. If you have ever had a cold sore in the past then no, you had the virus. Once you get it, it’s for life. And technically yes it is herpes. But it’s really common, like 75% of the population has that form of herpes. Coldsores never go away, they just visabaly go away. But the virus is still present, and there is no way to ever get rid of it. So the bright side is you don’t have to worry about it anymore. And you will get an outbreak maybe 2-3X a year. We all do, it’s become pretty normal really.
If it is actually a cold sore then it is oral herpes – a cold sore is just another name for an outrbeak of oral herpes. However, if you had just caught it then, it would take a minimum of 2 days for symptoms to show, and normally more. Have you ever had a cold sore before? 60% of us get them as kids, so it is more than likely that you already had the virus in your system. Cold sore outbreaks can be triggered by stress, by sunlight, by having a cold or being ill, by eating chocolate or nuts or even by friction – anything that allows the virus to surface basically. If it is a cold sore then yes it is herpes and probably type 1, but you developed symptoms far too soon for it to be anything to do with this guy.
