The answer to this question contains a bit of trivia that I find very amusing. One of the lowest rungs in the Hollywood ladder is that of a runner; an employee who literally runs mail to and from different places and who is nothing more than a gofer. One of the highest rungs in the Hollywood ladder is that of a showrunner. Showrunners are the people who often created and oversee production on different programs. Quite literally, they run the shows. Shonda Rimes (Greys Anatomy), Marc Cherry (Desperate Housewives), Shawn Ryan (The Shield), David Chase (The Sopranos) and Damon Lindelof (Lost) are some of the more famous showrunners working, or not working, today.
