It is not required that students complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for these particular loans. NIU recommends that students maximize the lower interest Federal Stafford Loan and then take out from an Alternative Student Loan and/or the Parent PLUS Loan the remaining balance needed to fund their college expenses. Private Alternative Student Loan borrowers will have their Federal Stafford Loan eligibility held against their private loan.
