You cannot apply for health insurance until you arrive in Alberta. When you move to Alberta from another province or territory, you are eligible for Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan coverage on the first day of the third month following your date of arrival. To ensure this, you must register before the first day of the fourth month after your arrival. If you do not apply for coverage within the required time, the effective date of coverage will be determined by Alberta Health and Wellness. If you apply within the specified period, the province you left continues to provide coverage until your new Alberta coverage begins.
