The PeakRewards℠ device installed at your home and connected to the air conditioning or electric heat pump unit is referred to as a “Smart Switch.” A “Smart Switch” is the outdoor air conditioner switch being used for the PeakRewards℠ program to help reduce peak demand for electricity. During periods of high electricity use in the Mid-Atlantic region, typically during the summer months, a radio signal may be sent to the Smart Switch to interrupt the flow of electricity to the compressor on your air conditioner or electric heat pump for a period of time each hour. This is called cycling (for more information on cycling, click here). Only electricity to the compressor is interrupted. The indoor fan will continue to run as programmed. Cycling reduces the peak demand for electricity, helping to maintain reliable service and keep down the cost of electricity.
